Island Migrations, Migration Cultures

The Monserrat Case

Saturday 1st May 1999

Throughout the twentieth century, Monserratians have consistently migrated from their island as a labour resource, often sending back remittance paymetns.   Recently, however, since the eruption of Chances Peak in 1995, approximately two thirds of the island's population have migrated fromt he island forfr very different reasons, whilst 74% of the remaining population have had to relocate to the north of the island.  Such drastic mass moevements have had - and continue to have - serious social, economic, political and cultural effects upon all tose involved.  This workshop will be a frum for the discussion of these effects for academics and non-academics working on the subject of migration and cultures of migration in general, and Monserratian migrants - both 'on' and 'off' island - in particular.

Researchers and service providers working in the area of migration, migration from Montserrat in particular are especially invited to attend this workshop.

Suggested themes:

  • theorising migration - globalisation; movement; positioning' identity; home .........

  • cultures of migration - remittances; assimilation and multiculturalism ....

  • Montserrat - relocation and resettlement; identity and community; citizenship and immigration; social and foreign policies; migration stress and trauma ....
